The journey of the Wellbeing Bangladesh Society (WBS) began in 1999 with a small act of kindness. A group of friends studying at the same institution shared one belief: no student should be left behind because of financial hardship. Driven by this conviction, they collected small contributions from classmates who could afford to help. With these modest funds, they bought textbooks, provided accommodation fees, medical expenses, offered basic necessities and financial support to students in need. It was a small initiative, born inside a campus, but it planted the seeds of something much larger.
The real turning point came in 2006. On April 13, a devastating tornado swept through Tangail and Manikganj, killing more than 60 people and leaving thousands injured and homeless. Witnessing this tragedy, the founding members of WBS felt that their responsibility had grown beyond helping fellow students. They mobilized community support, going door to door, calling friends, encouraging donations and provided urgent relief to affected families. What began as student charity began to evolve into a broader humanitarian mission.
Since 2012, Wellbeing Bangladesh Society (WBS) has been implementing a wide range of social development projects with the generous support of donors from all walks of life across Bangladesh. The organization regularly conducts seasonal and special humanitarian programmes, including Ramadan iftar and hot meal distributions, as well as Qurbani meat distribution for underprivileged families.
A new chapter began in 2016 when Global Relief Trust (GRT) extended its donor support to WBS. This collaboration enabled WBS to implement Ramadan iftar, food pack distributions, hot meal programmes, and Qurbani meat distribution in a more structured and sustainable manner. Although the partnership was informal, it played a significant role in strengthening WBS’s capacity to serve vulnerable communities and expand the reach of its humanitarian initiatives.
In 2020, Wellbeing Bangladesh Society (WBS) achieved a major milestone by obtaining official Society Registration from the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms (RJSC). This formal recognition significantly strengthened the organization’s institutional framework, enhanced accountability, and created new opportunities to undertake larger and more impactful development initiatives. Following this milestone, the partnership between WBS and Global Relief Trust (GRT) was further strengthened. WBS officially began working as an implementation partner, with GRT serving as the funding partner. This formal collaboration enabled both organizations to expand their humanitarian reach and deliver a wider range of services to vulnerable communities across the country.
Finally, in 2025, WBS achieved Bangladesh NGO Affairs Bureau registration marking its transformation into a nationally recognized humanitarian organization. What began in 1998 as a small gesture among friends had grown into a respected institution working for vulnerable communities across Bangladesh.
Today, the Wellbeing Bangladesh Society stands as a testament to the power of compassion and commitment. From its humble beginning to its national presence, the journey of WBS shows how a simple act of kindness can spark lasting change. Guided by empathy, service, and a deep belief in community support, WBS continues to serve those who need it most carrying forward the same spirit that inspired its first steps nearly three decades ago.
